Civil society again

The Lok Pal bill and Anna Hazare are much in the news and our minds again. Even those who support the objectives of the agitation (i.e. as against corruption) are not quite in support of some of the ensuing rhetoric.

It seems not irrelevant to point to an earlier post.

As I Please: Civil society and its concerns

There is also a very current comment by Anil Nauriya on this post. We look forward to further discussion on this issue.

This blog post is by Neelima Gupte and Sumathi Rao.

I suspect most people reading this would not actually have visited the Ramlila Maidan in recent days. I haven't either. So here's a write-up by two people who have. It seems to me that there is a lot of misinformation, among the "elite" commentators, on the nature of Hazare's movement, team and supporters. And to whatever extent the Gandhi comparison may or may not be valid, he does seem to have Gandhi's ability to speak directly to the people. I don't think -- from my quick reading -- either the Government or Jan Lokpal bills do a great job, but I think the government has betrayed total insinncerity on even discussing the matter, and the anger is legitimate.
